Fox Cities Schools
Information
Education was, and continues to be, a
priority in Appleton. In 1850, Daniel Huntley taught in the first free
public school. The St. Mary Catholic Church opened the first parochial school
in the community in 1864. The first 4-year high school began operating in 1876
in the Hercules School and Kindergarten was initiated in 1898 in Lincoln
School. With population growth came the need for additional facilities. Today
there are 24 public and 13 parochial schools.

Appleton Area School
District www.aasd.k12.wi.us
After
passing an $18 million technology and equity referendum in 1998, the Appleton
Area School District spent most of 1999 and early 2000 updating buildings and
equipment, enhancing technology and adding 16 reading teachers in the early
grades where youngsters can benefit most.
As part of its goal to put more
resources in the primary grades to ensure student success, Appleton is also
lowering class sizes at several schools through SAGE (Student Achievement
Guarantee in Education) and federal class size reduction funds.
Appleton, which recorded an official
enrollment of 14,664 for 1999-2000, is the largest school system in the Fox
Valley. Along with three high schools, the alternative high school and middle
school programs housed in the Morgan Building, the district has four middle
schools for grades 7 and 8 and 16 elementary schools.

Menasha Joint School
District
By all accounts, the Menasha Joint School District's
infusion of technology has been an unqualified success. When school started up
in the fall of 1999, students in Menasha schools began using the $2.7 million
in technology improvements implemented since the passage of $5.5 million
referendum in April 1998.
A high-speed fiber optic
communications network that links nine district buildings and 800 new classroom
computers have brought state-of-the-art instructional technology to the
district.

Neenah Joint School
District
The Neenah Joint School District will add the equivalent of
4.5 elementary teachers this fall despite a slight decline in the pupil
enrollment. The Board of Education added the teachers to help lower class sizes
and eliminate all split classes in the district. Split classes are those that
have pupils from two grades in one classroom.
The average class size of kindergarten
this fall will be 20 pupils, and the average class size of grades 1-5 will be
about 21.5 pupils. Officials expect the smaller classes to improve learning and
save remedial education costs.

First Time Buyers >The Perfect House
Home buyers must often deal with deferred maintenance or repairs. For example, you may have found a terrific house and like many competent home buyers, you included a structural inspection contingency in your purchase agreement. What happens when you find out that your "perfect" house needs some work? Do you ask the sellers to pay for the repairs? Before you answer "yes", there are some important considerations.
Some contracts require that all of the home's systems, such as plumbing, heating, electrical and central air conditioning, be in working order. In this case, the sellers may be obligated to repair any problems with these systems. Leaky roofs, damp basements, or other structural problems may not be covered, however. If you ask the sellers to make these types of repairs, you may void the contract by doing so. The sellers might prefer to negotiate the repairs to keep from losing the sale. If there are other buyers waiting in the wings with back-up contracts, you run the risk of losing the home.
